Answers:

Dry eye is more common than many would think. Although, dry eye symptoms can wax and wane true dry eye tends to be a chronic condition. There are three basic treatments available which should be considered based upon the severity of your symptoms.

Option 1 --- Mild to moderate dry eye.

Most mild cases of dry eye respond quite well to supplemental tears. Just go down to any pharmacy and get a bottle of artificial tears. There's no GREAT difference between brands but some will find that certain brands tend to work better than others for them.

Option 2 -- moderate to severe

If your symptoms are not controlled well with artificial tears you might look into getting your eye doctor to prescribe a relatively new eye drop called Restasis. Restasis is the only drug available that doesn't lubricate the eye but attempts to stimulate your eye to produce better tears by itself. Studies show that most people need to be on the drop for at least a month to know whether the drops are succesful. Also, Restasis is quite expensive. A one month supply can run 70-80 dollars or so.

Option 3 -- moderate to severe

I have found that many patients respond well to punctal occlusion. Each eye has two drainage portals (one in the upper lid and one in the lower) which drain tears from the eye into the back of the nose and down the throat. By placing small plugs in these portals (called puncta) it is possible to maintain more tears in the tear film.

Hope this helped.
