Will birth control pills really prevent me from wearing contacts?!

Question:

Will birth control pills really prevent me from wearing contacts?

I recently started taking Yasmin birth control, and I saw that one of the possible side effects is being unable to wear contact lenses. Is this because increased water retention?
Also, how likely is this to happen?
I want to get contact lenses as I'm very nearsighted and I dislike the way glasses make me look.

Answers:

no, unlikely. people ask me about this all the time (b/c they read the package inserts of their medication! which i think is admirable! good job!). but i have never, not one time, had a patient who had to discontinue their contact lens wear b/c of their birth control pills. and i fit contacts for a living!

some birth control medications cause dry eye, which could in theory make contact lens wear uncomfortable. thats why they put that in there.

but its usually no big deal. ask your eye doc, but dont get too worried about it...
