What is iritis/episcleritis?!
Question:
What is iritis/episcleritis?
ITS A KIND OF EYE INFECTION I THINK
Answers:
Those conditions are two different things. Anything ending in '-itis' is an inflammation of some kind. It's not an infection.
So iritis is inflammation of the iris. The symptoms include pain, red eyes, photophobia (light sensitivity) and watery eyes. It's a condition that needs treatment with drops (usually steroids) urgently as it can cause real problems if left untreated. A person with iritis also needs to be tested for linked systemic conditions such as sarcoidosis.
Episcleritis is a far more common condition, it is inflammation of the superficial layer of the sclera (white part of the eye), causing a red eye, or just part of the white can be red. There will be no discharge, and usually little or no pain. It usully goes away without treatment, but if its really troublesome your GP can prescribe anti-inflammatory drops.
Hope that helps!
