Answers:

They are just different prescriptions! Minus prescriptions are for myopia (nearsightedness). When you have myopia your eyeball is too long and the light focuses in front of your retina.... this means you need a diverging (minus powered) lens to bring the light to focus on your retina. When you have hyperopia (farsightedness) your eyeball is too short and the light comes to focus behind your retina.... this means you need a converging lens (plus powered) to help bring the light to focus on your retina. The number is just the strength of the correction... the higher the number the stronger the prescription!
