In the office where I work, I see more and more patients that want to wear the glasses as more of an accessory than "just as a pair of glasses". We have a lot of geometric-European inspired frames that are really flying off the boards. They are funky and chic and many people in our office want their frames to be bold and sophisticated.
For some, subtle styles are still in. And on certain people, less is more. Drill mounted frames are popular also, but not ideal for those with higher prescriptions or for those who tend to be careless with their glasses, as they are somewhat delicate.
So pretty much anything goes right now when it comes to frames. Don't forget to get frames that are comfortable, as well as stylish. I don't care how great the frame looks or how much you paid for it...if they feel awful on, you aren't going to wear them.
As for contacts, they are in too, especially for those with higher prescriptions and active lifestyles. Don't forget though - you still need a pair of good specs even when you ear contacts. You cannot count on your contacts 100% of the time and if for some reason you cannot wear them, you're going to be glad you have a pair of glasses that you aren't afraid to leave the house in.
