Can wearing over the counter reading glasses make your vision worse?!

Question:

Can wearing over the counter reading glasses make your vision worse?

Answers:

ah, a trick question! actually a very legitimate question.

for MOST people...no. as an adult, no rx will make your eyes worse or better no matter how little or how often you wear it, or even if it is the correct Rx for you or not, with the following exception:

if the person in question is an uncorrected "latent hyperope" who begins to wear OTC reading glasses, then their "latent" hyperopia will become "manifest" and they will perceive this as their vision "getting worse" (much worse!)

to put it more simply...if the person in question is significantly FARSIGHTED but they dont know it (which is pretty common, by the way), then their farsightedness will start "coming out" if they wear OTC reading glasses. i personally estimate this to be maybe 10% or so of the U.S. population. so for THAT 10%...yes, wearing reading glasses will make their vision "worse" (latent hyperopia becoming manefest). but for the other 9/10 of the population...no it doesnt matter what they wear.

so its not a myth. it just doesnt apply to everyone (not even close).

how does one know if they have "latent hyperopia"...? must have an eye examination by an actual eye doctor (optometrist). reading letters at the DMV or nurse's office doesnt count.
