Can I wear my 1-month contacts for more than a month, if I wear them sparsely an!

Question:

Can I wear my 1-month contacts for more than a month, if I wear them sparsely and clean?

I wear 1 month contacts, but wear them quite sparsely, averaging 2-3 hours a day and sometimes will go several days without wearing them. Is it possible to wear them beyond a 1 month period, considering I do not wear them for some of the days? Should contacts be disposed of after being used quantitatively (in hours used, like what I am asking), or from the minute I open them out of the foil package (1 month is 1 month, even if they are basically never worn)? Personal experiences would be good to hear, but I think the people most qualified to answer would be people who have found answers from studies, doctors, or have experience in the field. Please list your source if you could. Thank you so much for engaging the time for my question as well.

Answers:

common question.

the answer is..."monthly" contacts are designed for about 30 wears. the lens doesnt care if those are "consecutive" wears or not. so its not 30 days from the day you open the package...its 30 times ON YOUR EYE. so if only you wore your "monthly" contacts every other day, then only throw them away after you've worn them 30 times (which in that case would be TWO months).

same thing with 2 week lenses: only toss them after 14-15 wears, even if the wears are not consecutive.

but "only" wearing a lens 3 hrs *does* in my book constitute a "wear". thats b/c the lens still had to endure a "handling event"...insertion and removal. it still got pinched off your eye, etc.
