Windshield washer fluid in the eyes?!

Question:

Windshield washer fluid in the eyes?

I was doing oilfield work the other day, and got a high pressure jet of 50% methanol windshield washer fluid, along with a bunch of dirt blown right into my eyes. Still hurts! Anybody had something similar? How long did it take to heal?

I've been to the doctor, got some drops. The medic washed the crud out. I was just wondering how long it takes to heal. Thanks for all of your answers!

Answers:

Rinsing out the chemicals is a good idea but you need to be seen by an ophthalmologist ASAP. The cornea (the clear part of the eye that covers the colored part) may have been damaged. It can heal fairly quick but if there is any damage to the first layer you are open to infection. An ophthalmologist can prescribe an antibiotic to ward off infection and also make sure there is no permanent damage. Good luck and hope you feel better!
