What can I do to stop becoming short-sighted?!

Question:

What can I do to stop becoming short-sighted?

I am 16 and have been told that I will be short-sighted within 12mnth to 2yrs. Both my brother and sister are short sighted but both my parents have perfect vision.

Are there any excersises...anything that can help?

Answers:

Just because your siblings are nearsighted does not mean that you will become nearsighted as well. If you are already 16 and still have good vision then you have a good chance that it could stay that way! For example in my family... my father is significantly nearsighted and my mother is slightly farsighted! One of my siblings is slightly nearsighted the other slightly farsighted and I have an astigmatism! Even though we have one parent that can not see at all without glasses we all have fairly good vision and can function without any correction! That was just an example to illustrate how different the refractive errors can be within one family!

There is no solid scientific research that proves eye exercises actually improve or slow the progression of myopia/nearsightedness. If you do start becoming nearsighted you could try a procedure called orhto k or accelerated ortho keratology. This involves wearing special contact lenses while you sleep and can help slow the progression of myopia.
This is definitely something you will have to talk about with your eye doctor! I would recommend keeping up your regular eye exams and hopefully you will not become nearsighted!!!
