I need advice on what to do with the coating peeling on my glasses?!

Question:

I need advice on what to do with the coating peeling on my glasses?

Either the tint or the anti-glare coating is peeling off my eyeglasses. I read somewhere that it could be removed, but when I called the store I was told that was not possible. Is this true or should I try someplace else? What should I do. I am not able to purchase new glasses at this time.

The tint was added a few days after I purchased the glasses.

Answers:

It's probably the anti-glare coating that you have on your lenses that is peeling off. They do make a liquid anti-glare stripper but not all places have it on the premises. Where I work, we just recently started carrying it. Up until we had it in our lab, we had to send the lenses out to the surfacing lab to have it stripped off. The stripper that we use works very well in a matter of minutes, but there is no guarantee that the lenses won't be totally ruined after stripping it off. 9 times out of 10, they are fine. But on occasion, the stripper has totally marred some lenses. So, they would probably tell you that its done at your own risk and they will not be held accountable if something happens. Once the coating comes off, the lenses are pretty much clear, except for any scratches that went through the coating into the surface of the lens.

If your Optometrist's office doesn't carry the stripper, call around. But even if they don't carry it, they should still be able to send your glasses out to be stripped, which is of course impossible if you don't have another pair to wear while they are being sent out.

The next time you do get lenses, ask for Crizal or Zeiss Anti-Reflective coating. Its 100% better than some of the cheaper coatings for glare. Its a little more expensive, but they don't peel off the way the cheaper coatings do.

Good luck to you!
