Can a person in a coma have an eye exam?!

Can a person in a coma have an eye exam?

I just got a letter saying my mother had an eye exam and they want me to give permission for her to get new glasses.
MY MOTHERS IS IN A COMA.
She has been in a coma since November.
Is it possible to give an eye exam to a person in a coma or are they trying to rip off her insurance company?
It sounds like a scam to me.
I am hoping to hear from someone with a medical background or someone who knows someone who had a exam while in a coma.
I called them but they are closed till monday.

I'm an eye surgeon [not American] . Any one can be eye examined while in coma ,but not for glasses !!!! We may look for increased intracranial pressure , vitreous or retinal hemorrhage ,light reflex or even inflammation ,but never glasses [why ?!!!!] Just make sure what is the case and ask meticulously [ I'm really confused ] and If you needed any thing contact me .
