Wearing contact lenses while going to the sea?!

Question:

Wearing contact lenses while going to the sea?

Have you ever dipped into the sea with your contact lenses on? I've done it sometimes before, I didn't have any problems with my eyes or anything, the problem was that my lenses got off, and I lost them! Do you know of anything I could do, so that they stay on my eyes all the time (like not opening my eyes while underwater, I won't do that again)?

Answers:

Just because you've been fortunate enough to NOT have contracted a very nasty and aggressive eye infection thus far, doesn't mean that you can't and won't. Do you have any idea just how much bacteria there is in the ocean, let alone how much is in the tap water coming out of your faucet at home? One in particular, called acanthamoeba is very nasty and can cause blindness in the most severe cases. If you want to risk that, and lose a bunch of contacts, by all means, continue to wear your lenses in the ocean.

But, if you are at all concerned about the health of your eyes and you don't want to be buying new contacts to replace the ones that are swimming with the fishes, then wear your glasses at the beach, or get yourself some prescription swimming goggles from your Optometrist's office.
