What kind of glasses....?!

Question:

What kind of glasses....?

What do you call those glasses that make a person's eyes look gigantic? How would someone fake this look? Dustin Hoffman wore those glasses in Papillon, could he really not see in the movie or is there a way to make normal glasses appear like those coke-bottle ones?

Answers:

Well what causes a persons eyes to look "gigantic" through their eyeglass lenses is their prescription. A higher plus (+) prescription for hyperopia (farsightedness) would have this magnifying effect on the eyes. This type of lens is thicker in the center and thinner at the edges. The only way glasses can get that effect is to have a moderate to high hyperopic prescription. Im not sure why you would intentionally want to re create this effect... in the optical industry we try different techniques to avoid this at all costs. Unless you have a prescription you will not be able to get glasses like this... unless you can find high powered drug store readers. In saying that it just wouldn't be safe anyways... looking through a prescription that is not made for you will be very uncomfortable and could be dangerous. You could trip or walk into things and hurt yourself.
EDIT** Lol I just looked up novelty glasses and they have these "nerd glasses" but the actual term "coke bottle" glasses refers to glasses that minfy your eyes (make them look smaller) and they do have novelty glasses that are coke bottle and make your eyes look smaller.... check em out http://www.books4you.addr.com/nerdglasse...

Ohh I found them... they are called "bug eye" http://www.partyconnection.co.uk/acatalo...
