Colored Contacts?!

Question:

Colored Contacts?

I'm thinking about getting colored contacts and I just wanted to know some of the pros and cons about getting them. I've heard that they're not like stained glass (metaphorically speaking) and that they're more like painted on - as in, if they move on your eye then you won't be able to see. I've also heard that they're bigger than normal contacts that there is a little discomfort involved until you get used to them. I was thinking about getting dark purple lenses, and I wasn't sure if skin/hair color was a factor if you want them to look good. So along with my first question, what are some good color choices?

Answers:

okey pokey nice uninformed personal opinion there from everyone.

there are several types of coloured lenses you can get, in the uk the most common are ciba freshlook - these have the widest colour choice and range from subtle to very dramatic. you have one pair which you use for 30 days taking them out everynight, you can wear them daily but the dont feel as comfortable as normal lenses even once you are used to them, this is because they are very slightly thicker and you can just about feel the coloured part of the lens on your eyelid as it is not as smooth as the rest of the lens.

You can also get daily disposable coloured lenses - acuvue do them quite a small colour range though, however i think they do violet.

Another brand similar to ciba, is coopervision expressions, these are the ones i use as the sea green in the ciba range does not look nice in my eyes.

The lens itself - the centre of the lens is clear (no colour) so you can see through it, if you do move the lens over the pupil you will see a coloured cloudiness but it wont totally obscure your vision.

with regards to size, the diameter of the lens can be bigger than some contact lenses but is generally 8.6/8.7.

If you have fair skin dark purple doesnt look too unatural until people get close up (they dont show in my eyes). On brown eyes on people with darker skin they really show up but saying that on anyone with dark skin anyother colour than brown will look unatural anyway.

I have dark blue eyes that tend to reflect colour around them so i can only wear bright green or brown.

You should be able to try lenses on before you choose what colour to buy, you should ask your optician if you can do this.

If you have never had contact lenses before you will need to have a s/t and a contact lens consultation even if they are just plano (non prescription) lenses. This is to ensure your eyes are healthy and that you are suitable for lenses.
