How do you clean the gunk around your eyeglass rims between the glass and frame?!

How do you clean the gunk around your eyeglass rims between the glass and frame?

Answers:

What you are referring to is what we affectionately at my office, call "face cheese" LOL Its an accumulation of of sweat, oil, dead skin cells, dirt, and grime and the person who posted about it not being happening overnight was right.

It is best to take them to the place where you got them and have them take the lenses out and clean all that crud out. Where I work, we clean people's glasses no matter where they bought them if they ask. We usually use a q-tip and come rubbing alcohol to get that "face cheese" out. And if they are REALLY bad, we actually have an ultrasonic cleaner in our lab that we can put them in for a few minutes and that works wonders.

You can try to clean them with the q-tip and alcohol at home, but like "Ilovemyson" had mentioned, this is tricky because if you cannot get your lenses back in, your kind of screwed. Those screws are teeny tiny and if you need your glasses to see, it makes it tough to take your own specs apart. And you also have to worry about getting the lenses back in the frame properly so that it doesn't throw your prescription off. Some frames have identical lenses for the right and left and you don't want to mix them up. I've fixed glasses for people who had there lenses in reversed, upside down - you name it!

If you're noticing that you actually have green corrosion on your glasses, that is indicative of having some type of allergic reaction to the nickel they use in a lot of metal frames. The acid in your skin eats away the finish of the frame and turns it green (which sometimes leaves a green mark on your face where ever the frame touches you) and causes pitting on the frame. You can't really remove all of the green but next time you get new specs, you want to look for something that's either made of stainless steel or titanium. That will eliminate the problem.

If you're wondering about cleaning your nose pads because they are all green or yellow and funky - don't bother. They really cannot be cleaned. Silicone nose pads actually absorb oil and dirt and sweat so the only way to take care of them is to have them changed.

Think of your glasses like you would your car...you take your car in for oil changes, lube jobs, and tune-ups. Do the same thing with your glasses. I tell people when the seasons change, have new nose pads put on your frames. I always encourage our patients to stop in whenever they can to have us clean their frames, change their nose pads, adjust and straighten their frames, and tighten all of their screws BEFORE they have a lens pop out.
