Floaters in eyes?!

Question:

Floaters in eyes?

I have several floaters in both eyes and I find them very annoying. Does anyone know if there is a procedure to get rid of them? Thanks

Answers:

What you are experiencing is called myodesopsia. I have the exact same problem and have even gone to the optometrist about it. In the vast majority of cases, they are harmless and are only an annoyance.

However, sometimes these floaters are caused by a detached or torn retina which are very serious and require immediate medical attention. But usually, the vitreous humor (the gel like stuff in our eye) starts to peel off the inside of the wall and does not cause any problems, besides creating floaters. This is a normal symptom of aging, even if you are young.

As for removal, the only real treatment is a vitrectomy. This is where they remove all the gel from your eye and replace it with a saline solution. Unless the floaters are VERY severe, this should not be used, because the procedure can have many complications, blindness included.

There are some laser treatments that are said to break apart floaters, but only a hand full of professionals do this, and I really don't know much about this. (search "Yag laser floaters" in google and you'll find a bunch of info on it"

However, floaters are known to get better over time. A combination of you getting used to them, and them settling in your eye. When i first started to notice mine, they drove me crazy, that was like 3 months ago. Now I barely notice them.

Hope all this helps!
