Is it okay to use regular glass cleaner to clean eyeglasses?!

Question:

Is it okay to use regular glass cleaner to clean eyeglasses?

For some reason, my glasses catch fingerprints easily (even if I never touch them), and using the cloth that came with them alone never really works. If I can't use glass cleaner, what can i do to make my glasses clean again? (and no, I am not willing to put vinegar on them.)

Answers:

Really, the best thing to use is simply soap and water. The soap removes the oils left by fingerprints very well. I am wondering as to whether your eyeglasses have an anti reflective coating. Anti reflective coatings work well when they are clean but in the real world I have found they are very frustrating for patients to keep clean. Oil type deposits cause glaring obvious reflections because the surrounding lens surface without the finger print has low reflectivity but the oily fingerprint is HIGHLY reflective.

If indeed you have anti reflective lenses you might try changing to a new antireflective lens called "Alize". The company isn't saying how they've done it but they have succefully developed an antireflective coating that does NOT show fingerprinting and is easily maintained and kept clean.

Oh, and don't forget. The most important aspect of cleaning your glasses is not the liquid you use but the type clothe you use. Always clean the lens surface thoroughly and rinse any debri off before drying with a soft cotton type clothe the consistency of a baby diaper. Any debri on the lens can act as an abrasive when you wipe and dry the lens. And any cloth less soft than a baby diaper can potentially scratch the lens over time. Hope this helped.
