If you get laser surgery for distance, do you loose your nearsight vision??!

Question:

If you get laser surgery for distance, do you loose your nearsight vision??

I have ok distance vision, but I still need glasses to clearly make out words and signs at a distance. I also have way better than perfect near vision. I just turned 18, and hate the possibility of me wearing glasses for the rest of my life. So if I were to get laser surgery, would it be permanent, and would it degrade my near vision?

Answers:

Don't worry. At 18 you have no worries about losing your near vision with laser vision. That is for NOW you don't. When you turn 40 or so, you will begin to lose your ability to focus at near and then will need reading glasses. The confusion about this comes because some people choose to have laser vision correction done AFTER they are already 40 and have already lost their ability to focus at near due to aging. These people will immediately notice they are unable to see clearly at near. The only difference between you and them is that you will have to wait a few years before you notice the same problem. But, whether you do laser vision or not, you WILL lose your ability to focus at near at about 40 years of age. If you choose not to have laser vision correction when you turn 40 you will be able to take your glasses or contacts off and still read. But then you won't be able to see clearly at distance. So, no matter what you do, laser or not, you're going to age and lose focusing ability. This will be just one of the things in life you will notice that change as you age.

As to your question about will it be permanent, the answer is yes.
