Laser eye surgery?!

Question:

Laser eye surgery?

I am very nearsighted, and I know it's not a good idea to try to have my vision totally corrected with laser surgery, but can it be improved? Even just shaving off a few diopters would be great. I don't mind wearing contacts, but I'm almost to the point where they will be very expensive. My prescription is -11.50 in my left eye, and -10.00 in my right eye.

Answers:

I am an eye doctor, You have significant myopia and for this degree of myopia, if you decide to have the surgery, it is challenging for the surgeon as well, the risk of under or overcorrection is always there in any degree, but in your case it is more, there is also risk of losing more tissue during the surgery(surgery involves sculpting the cornea to reduce the focussing power) and related problems in the future like keratectasia etc.

It also can make difficult in the future when you get older and if there is family history of glaucoma to do glaucoma assessments etc.

There are new procedures in laser surgery called LASEK ,Epi- Lasik which are preferable when your corneal thickness is not within the normal range but they are not as predictable as LASIK as far as the visual outcome is concerned . They are slightly cumbersome and painful compared to LASIK.

And there is another risk of recurrence of myopia in the future again especially with high myopes like you are. I would suggest you to seek an appointment with a qualified eye refractive surgeon especially a corneal surgeon, discuss pros and cons then decide. dont rush into surgery.
