Is it okay to wear my contacts in the pool or at a beach without goggles?!

Question:

Is it okay to wear my contacts in the pool or at a beach without goggles?

We are going to Indiana Beach in a few weeks and I don't want to have to wear goggles. We take a lot of pics, so I don't want too have to keep removing them for every picture. But I have very blurry vision without them and I don't want to bring my glasses with me.

Answers:

You should not wear contact lenses when swimming at all if you can help it, especially at the beach. There are many things found in the water (even chlorinated water) that can contaminate your lenses and give you a terrible infection. i.e., acanthamoeba. If you happen to fall in a body of water, remove the lenses immediately after and disinfect them for the amount of time recommended for your care system. Also, if you should fall into a body of water with them on, I'd hope you'd be wearing well-fitting goggles as that would be somewhat protective. But, if you're going to walk around with goggles on, may I suggest a prescriptive pair so you won't have to wear your contacts at all and worry about contaminating them =P!
