I have been told i have signs of glaucoma by my optician and have been referred !

Question:

I have been told i have signs of glaucoma by my optician and have been referred to the hospital for tests.?

If i do have glaucoma i have been told i will have to use drops every day for the rest of my life, does this mean that if i DONT use the drops i would certainly go blind ?

Answers:

Once you have been diagnosed with GLAUCOMA, this will stay with you for the rest of your life. Like several other diseases (hypertension, diabetes, etc) there is NO CURE of glaucoma. There is no medical or surgical treatment that will REMOVE the glaucoma, but there are medical and surgical treatments (including LASER treatment) to CONTROL the disease process.

Untreated glaucoma will inevitably lead to irreversible blindness, but with proper treatment, the possibility of blindness can be prevented.

Whether medical or surgical treatment is required to control glaucoma is best determined after you are properly evaluated by an ophthalmologist.

Please see an ophthalmologist first before worrying about having glaucoma. For all you know, you might not have it, and you would have been worrying over nothing.
