Why do my glasses get darker in the Winter time then the SUmmer time?!

Why do my glasses get darker in the Winter time then the SUmmer time?
I have those type of glasses that tint up into sunglasses (Photogreys) when you step outside. During the Winter time, and when there is snow on the ground they get very dark, and they look exactly like sunglasses when they are that dark. However in the summer time, they do not get as dark, but they do still tint into good sunglasses. What casues them to be darker, and what causes them to change into sunglasses, it is a certain chemical that makes them darker in the Winter time?
