Dicky eye?!

Question:

Dicky eye?

Been told by my optician that I have an abrasion/crater thingy on my eye and I am at risk of getting eye infection. Going on hols next week and he told me not to wear contact lenses and to avoid going swimming or getting any foreign water in my eye! If my eye gets sore, red, itchy I must go to A&E immediately. As I am taking my two young children away with my I want to avoid this. Also want to avoid looking like Dierdre Barlow, but as I've only got one pair of specs that are revolting, doesn't look like I've much choice on that one. Apart from walking round with my eye shut, or wearing goggles for a fortnight, anyone got any advice on preventing eye infections, any drops I could use? .

Answers:

The best advise I can give is not to put the lenses back in your eyes until the abrasion resolves. Your doctor should be monitoring this for you and will give you a time-frame for resuming lens wear. Most abrasions will heal within a few days. The only thing you can do beyond prescriptive treatment is to be sure to keep the eye hydrated with preservative-free artificial tears every 2 to 3 hours. Best of luck.
