How do I fix my lazy eye?!

Question:

How do I fix my lazy eye?

When I was in first grade, I wore an eye patch to help and my parents told me that it was ok. Logged into a personals website and tried to post my pic but they all showed my right eye veering outside my other eye. Anyone have any suggestions that don't include health insurance?

Eye doctors never even mentioned the situation to me. I've been to several since moving out of the house.

Answers:

It does sound like amblyopia, which is a form of misalignment of the eyes in which one eye is weaker than the other. The other eye winds up doing all of the work and the brain sort of "shuts off" the weaker eye. If it was caught when you were a child and they patched you but you still have it, it sounds like it never fully went away. The problem with amblyopia is that it MUST be caught very early in childhood so that the weaker or lazy eye can be re-trained (hence the patching of the good eye, to force the weaker eye to work) After a certain age, the vision in the weaker eye is lost and the only time surgery can really help is if the ambyopia is caused by strabismus, which is another condition in which the eyes don't focus together. If it is caused by strabismus, they can do surgery to correct the muscles in the eye to help them focus, and sometimes this will take care of the amblyopia. But not in all cases. And, I'm not sure that surgery at this point would be a good option because it has been so long that the damage may be irreparable.

Your best bet is to get in touch with your eye doctor and find out what your options are. There may be nothing that can be done at this point, but you never know...

Good luck!
