Is iazy eye correctable?!

Question:

Is iazy eye correctable?

Answers:

A lazy eye, or amblyopia, is correctable if caught early enough. And by early enough, I mean in early childhood. Amblyopia can be brought on by a strong uncorrected refracted error (strong near or farsightedness) or it can caused by strabismus. Strabismus is a condition where the eyes don't look toward an object together. One eye focuses, and the other does not follow, but instead points either in, out, up, or down. It is an unequal pulling of the muscles that control the focusing ability of the eyes.

It is a misalignment of the eyes. The muscles in one of the eyes is weaker and does not focus the correctly with the stronger eye. The stronger eye then winds up doing all of the work and vision in the weaker eye is lost - if it not caught early enough. Eventually, the brain kind of ignores the weaker eye, even though it may have vision. The brain pays attention to only the good eye.

When diagnosed, most times they will patch the good eye. This is to force the weak eye to focus, thus strengthening it. The patch is either placed right over the eye, or if glasses are required, the patch can be placed over the lens of the good eye in a pair of glasses. A few weeks or months of patching the good eye for several hours a day, or all day (depending on what the doctor orders) will usually strengthen the eye and correct the problem.

Sometimes they prescribe a drop for the parent to administer in the good eye that will dilate the pupil, thus causing the vision to be get blurry. This method is usually not as effective as patching.

There are also visual training exercises that can be done to help train the eyes.

Its very important to catch amblyopia as early as possible in order to treat it. Surgery can be an option for children who's amblyopia has been caused by strabismus.
