If you have a low level infection in your eyes from streptococcus for a long tim!

Question:

If you have a low level infection in your eyes from streptococcus for a long time, will it ruin your eyesight?

The doc said it was chronic, that even if I seemingly cleared it, the infection will never go away. Sometimes light burns my eyes. I can't remember what he called it. Blephemiartis? Could your eyesight get worse or could you go blind?

Answers:

This is a good question and please know that you are not alone in this problem. First, I think probably you are having a low level chronic STAPHYLOCOCCUS infection. The term you were referring to is called blepharitis. Some people just have chronic lid infection with staphylococcus and it is unfortunately difficult to remedy.

Two things you might consider. First, many people do much better by doing regular twice a day lid hygiene. This involves using a wet Q tip with a small amount of baby shampoo to gently rub the upper and lower lid margins where your lashes grow. This tends to help keep the oil glands open and also tends to help control the buildup of staph bacteria in the lid.

Also, recent research has shown that ongoing regular use of low dosage doxycyline oral antibiotics is safe and effective in controlling chronic staph infections like blepharitis and acne rosacea. Low dosage doxycycline is available in 20 mg dosage in a pill called Periostat.

Talk to your eye doctor about this. You shouldn't have to suffer. Hopefully, these two treatments can be helpful. Good luck and have a nice day and a great tomorrow.
