Is acathamoeba in the tap water in St. Louis?!

Question:

Is acathamoeba in the tap water in St. Louis?

Acanthamoeba is a genus of amoebae, one of the most common protozoa in soil, and also frequently found in fresh water and other habitats. I need to know if it is in the water because I have contact lenses and I need to know if it's safe to wash my lenses in this tap water or not.

Answers:

Well hun its good to see that you are aware of the danger of Acanthamoeba and the danger of it contaminating a contact lens. Once a lens becomes contaminated with acanthamoeba it is unlikely it will be "cleansed" off of the lens. The infection it causes is very serious and difficult to treat... in some cases it can lead to loss of vision.
Acanthamoeba is very commonly found in tap water and fresh water. Any eye care professional will advise against you using tap water in any way with your contact lenses. For the same reason you should never swim with your contacts or even have tap water go into your eyes while wearing them.
I am not sure about the water situation in St. Louis... but I do know that Acanthamoeba is found in tap water everywhere. It is just not worth the risk hun. Use the contact lens solution your eye care professional has recommended for you to use when rinsing your contacts.
Hope that helps a bit hun :)
