New contacts burning/hurting? Why?!

Question:

New contacts burning/hurting? Why?

I have the strangest problem and thought I'd finally bring it up and see what others thought. I wear Night and Day contacts (from Ciba, I think?) and when I put in a brand new pair, I can't wear them because they make my eyes sting and get all red. So, I have to take them out and let them soak in my own contact solution for a day or so. Then they're fine!

Why would this happen? I mentioned it to my eye doctor and she said she'd never heard of anything like it, so that wasn't very helpful. I'm thinking that maybe my eyes are sensitive to some kind of coating on the new lenses.... it's almost like an allergic reaction.

Answers:

Perhaps you are sensitive to the solution that they come packaged in from the manufacturer. I've seen a few patients with the same problem come through the office where I work.

All you have to do is take the new pair out of the packaging, rinse them off with your solution, and let them soak in the case in your solution for a while before you put them in. That should take care of the burning. Some people just have very sensitive eyes and they must be careful what they use on their contacts. The is obviously some preservative in the buffered solution from the manufacturer that you are sensitive to...

See if that works and let me know how you make out!!!
