Why do clear contacts turn green when you put them in water?!

Question:

Why do clear contacts turn green when you put them in water?

I wear clear contacts. Sometimes when I forget my solution or don't have any, I put them in water. The next time I try to wear them they're a greenish tent. Why is this?

Answers:

It is some sort of chemical that your water is being treated with that is reacting with the lens material. Do not put these lenses back in your eyes. Soft contacts will soak up anything they can and you will be putting the contaminates/chemicals in the water into your eye....this can cause irritation, infection and possibly even damage. Never soak your lenses in tap water, there are too many risks.
Acanthamoeba is very commonly found in tap water and fresh water. Ancanthamoeba is a microbe that can be the cause of a terrible eye infection in contact lens wearers.
The infection it causes is very serious and difficult to treat... in some cases it can lead to loss of vision.
Any eye care professional will advise against you using tap water in any way with your contact lenses.
Please always use the appropriate storing solution for your contact lenses...and throw away the contaminated ones.

Good luck hun :)
