Answers:

You may want to be checked for keratoconus [carrot-tah-cone-us]. I have it and it is difficult to diagnose because it involves an irregular shaped cornea which is on the surface of the eye rather than inside the eye. Most opticians correct your vision based on inner eye conditions. If they miss this corneal condition, their eye correction glasses will never work properly. This condition is best treated with hard contacts and/or surgery. I was legally blind and unable to drive until this condition was dealt with properly. You can probably get great vision with the proper contacts. But keratoconus is a condition which gradually gets worse over time and eventually you will need a corneal transplant. I've had a corneal transplant in both eyes and my vision is very good now. The surgery is painless...nothing to worry about.

You may want to make some calls and ask which of your local eye doctors have the equipment available to diagnose keratoconus.

Here's an encouraging experiment you can try on yourself to see if your vision is able to easily be restored:

Take a couple of pieces of aluminum foil large enough to cover each eye. Then poke a pin hole in each piece of foil and put them up to your eyes and look through the holes. Do not use your glasses! You should be astounded that you can see clearly through these! The ancient Egyptians wore pin hole disks over their eyes as a primitive way to correct their vision. My eye doctor did this with me and I thought it was so cool! And it came in handy.....

Once when I drove a truck for a living it was time for my driver's license renewal and I was going to have to take the eye exam. (You know where you look through the little scope thingy) At the time my keratoconus had worsened, I had poor vision and I couldn't afford to do anything about it. I knew my vision wasn't passable so I had to come up with some way to pass that exam. I would lose my job if I didn't pass that exam! So, I remembered the pin hole disks the Egyptians used and I made two "extended thumbnails" with pin holes in them. I attached these to my thumbs knowing that when I had to look through the eye exam scope I could simply grip the scope as I looked through it secretly slipping my thumbs in front of my eyes using my pin holes! I wasn't sure if it would work until I was there on the spot, but it was my only chance. I was afraid the guy behind me would see what I was doing and blow it for me somehow. I was so nervous. The time came. I was next! This was it! The DMV lady said "Look through the scope and read from left to right." I gripped the scope just like I planned...delight came over me as I could read perfectly through my pin hole thumbnails!!!!! You should see the smile on my face on my new license!!! Best driver's lisence picture I ever took! Everyone who saw it always commented on how happy I looked! :) Luckily, later on I got a new job and was able to afford the eye care I needed.

When you pick a "best answer" for this question, please write and say whether or not the pin hole trick worked for you. I'd be curious to know. - Thanks and good luck!!!
