You're staring at the screen, concentrating, not blinking as much . . .your eyes are probably dry. Try using artificial tears every 1-2 hours. You should limit the drops that promise "to get the red out" --- those are basal constricters. They temporarily shrink your irritated swollen vessels in the whites of your eyes, so your eyes look less red. But there's a rebound effect, those vessels will eventually look red again.
Also, if you are straining your eyes because you need Rx glasses at the computer, that can cause your eyes to be red.
(P.S. Lack of oxygen to the cornea does not penetrate through to the retina, causing macular degeneration. And studies indicate that macular degeneration can not 'go away' although sometimes it can be slowed. The person fitted with the more breatheable contact lens --- did you mean you had Corneal Neovascularization {extra vessel growth on to the cornea from lack of oxygen; can be reversed with increased oxygen}?)
