Can I have LASIK eye surgery to correct vision problems caused by an eye injury?!

Question:

Can I have LASIK eye surgery to correct vision problems caused by an eye injury?

When I was 12 years old I was hit in the eye by a wooden stick. It wasn't a serious injury, but I had to wear a patch for about a week. I think something was scratched?? Now my vision is about 20/70 and really washed out in that eye.

Of course I will have consultations with a doctor before the procedure so if that is your answer don't bother. I just want to know whether I'm wasting time even having a consultation. I'd like direction to a good source of information, too.

Answers:

I'm not so sure that LASIK will work for you, only because the laser re-sculpts the surface of the cornea in order to improve your vision. If you had an injury to your eye, your cornea may not be suitable for reshaping. You also need to have a certain thickness on your cornea in order for them to slice the flap, re sculpt the cornea and replace the flap. If your cornea has been damaged, you may not have enough there to work with.

When I worked in the Ophthalmologist's office, we did LASIK and they often helpd free seminars and did free pre-testing to determine if you were a good candidate for the procedure. There are several tests that they can do that will enable them to see if it would help you. Call around to your local Ophthamologists' offices and ask about any seminars. Around here in PA, they advertise them on the radio.

Good luck!
