I have a floater in my visreal fluid?!

Question:

I have a floater in my visreal fluid?

I have a floater in my visreal fluid (I probably spelled that wrong). It is getting worse as time goes on. My left eye looks like I am looking through fog, and it makes it hard to focus properly. I know I need to see an opthomologist, but the last one I saw said there was nothing they could do. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you take care of it?

Answers:

Floaters are very common and generally are harmless, but some are not and signal problems with the retina, especially those accompanied by flashing lights. You need to have it evaluated again, especially if you feel it's getting worse. Time is definitely of the essence where the retina is involved. Don't wait! That said, it you have had a posterior vitreous detachment without retinal involvement, the floaters can be quite large and annoying. There is no mainstream treatment for it and you typically have to make friends with it. There are surgeons out there who will try to reduce them with laser treatment. This is occasionally successful. I had a patient choose to undergo that procedure. He had to travel four hours away to find someone who would perform it, and his results weren't satisfactory. Take home point: go to another doctor for another opinion immediately.
