I'm 47 years old and this year I noticed "specs" in my vision.?!

Question:

I'm 47 years old and this year I noticed "specs" in my vision.?

They seem to be maybe the size of a piece of rice. They are black on the inside and appear to be outlined in light. They occur in all areas of my vision, any time of the day, usually one at a time, probably on average of 1 every couple minutes. They don't seem to be floating, but appear and disappear without moving. Is this old age or does it sound like a disease process?

I had my eyes checked by an optician when they first started and he could not see any abnormality inside my eyes. He told me they were probably just "floaters". I know what floaters are, but these are a lot bigger and intense.

I'm sorry, I've seen an "opthalmologist", not an optician.

A few other possibilities:
1. Migraine precursors (phosphenes, prodrome): when I've had them, they seem to move or rotate, and may last for an hour. Usually not a problem (even entertaining, once I stop worrying :-) as long as I don't get the migraine.
2. The vitreous humor may liquefy with age, causing blotches in the vision; this then improves once uniform. An ophthalmologist could see this during a checkup, however.
3. Retinal problem, such as due to glaucoma, but I presume you had a glaucoma test. You did, didn't you??
4. Your question provoked me to Google "phosphene", and I found that they may be associated with optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis. Not likely, but you could ask your GP.
5. Some problem in the visual cortex... unlikely, but if all else is eliminated, you might ask that of the doctor, as well.
