Does anyone know anything about the ReStor lens?!

Question:

Does anyone know anything about the ReStor lens?

My dad has Cataracts in his eyes and needs surgery. His doctor told him about this new thing called the ReStor lens where they replace the lens in your eye with a flexible lens (I think that's what happens). The doctor said she doesn't recommened it because it is very new, but said she knows many people who love it. Any one have it or know anything about it? What do you think is best for my dad to do?

Answers:

The Acrysoft Restor lens is a multifocal lens. Its main difference between the traditional monofocal intra-ocular lens (IOL) implants is that it provides several focal points as opposed to just one. By providing several focal points it provides the sensation of accomodation (being able to focus between far and near) for the patient, BUT in reality it is only a form of PSEUDO-accomodation since the lens itself doesn't really adjust. It only provides several focal points from which the patient can "choose" from.

It is built on the acrysoft platform which is an acrylic lens and all acrylic lenses can be folded into a smallaer configuration which allows it to be inplanted through a 2.5 to 3.0 mm incision.

It is fairly new, (FDA approved in march 2005), but the real issue about this lens is that there is a VERY strict selection criteria for individuals who will actually like or benefit from this lens. It's an expensive lens and the company (alcon) and the ophthalmologists who implant there lenses want to make sure that their patients are happy with the implant.

There are several types of multi-focals (AMO rezoom and array for example) and there are accomodating lenses (crystalens and synchrony) that are available.

It would really be best to discuss this further with your father's ophthalmologist.
