Contacts and swimming?!

Question:

Contacts and swimming?

If I have contacts, is it bad to open my eyes underwater? I'm afraid the contacts will fall out, so I wear goggles. Can i swim without them?

Answers:

The official party line is not to swim in contacts. If you happen to fall in a body of water with them on, remove them and clean them afterwards with at least 4-6 hours of soaking in the disinfectant. Lots of things live in water that can contaminate your lenses and infect your eyes, most notably acanthamoeba. This is not a fun thing to contract.
