it depends on the cause of the dry eye. if the dryness is from lack of tear production, then Rx-only "restasis" or OTC "optive" and "systane" are my favorites. if the cause of the dryness is improper tear film consistency (i.e. too oily or not oily enough, etc etc) then the solution is fix the underlying cause of the inconsistency. some common causes of tear film problems are meibomian gland dysfunction, contact lens abuse and blepharitis. would need an eye exam and some instruction on how to solve the individual problem.
