Is it posibble for your eye to fall out?!

Question:

Is it posibble for your eye to fall out?

Answers:

There are several structures on and around the globe of the eye which holds it in its place inside the bony orbit and the RETINA is NOT one of them. Retinal detachment can cause blindness, but CAN NOT cause an eye to fall out.

Among the structures which hold the eye attached to the apex of the bony orbit are: the optic nerve and the six extra-ocular muscles which are inserted into the globe. The orbital septum, which is a tough membrane-like connective tissue near the eye lid, also serves to hold the eye in.

The ONLY time when an eye can actually "fall out" of your head is when ALL these structures are cut or compromised. Otherwise, the eye is usually just "pushed out" or "pushed forward and appears to have "popped out."

Conditions such as thyroid ophthalmopathy (a.k.a. Grave's Ophthalmopathy), orbital tumors, orbital hemorhages, orbital pseudo-tumors can also cause the eye to be PROPTOSED or appear pushed out / pushed forward.

In cases of eye tumors in which the eye has to be removed all previously mentioned sturctures HAVE TO BE CUT first for the eye to be taken out.

THUS, the answer is no, the eye can not just literally "fall out" even in certain disease conditions. Only the surgical procedures of enucleation and extenteration and very very severe trauma can cause the ey to "fall out."
