I was wondering if anyone has had ICL - Implantable Collamer Lens?!

Question:

I was wondering if anyone has had ICL - Implantable Collamer Lens?

Can you tell me about your experience and whether you have had any bad side effects?

Answers:

Visian Implantable Collamer Lenses is a type of PHAKIC INTRA OCULAR LENS (phakic IOL). It was FDA approved in 2005. It's main advantage over LASIK and other refractive therapies applied to the cornea (the clear front part of your eye) is that it is REVERSIBLE. It involves no removal of tissue which can never be returned to the eye.

Being an IOL it is implanted INTO the eye. The term "phakic" means that the natural len is not removed. Thus Phakic -IOLs are implanted into the ANTERIOR CHAMBER of the eye, the area between the cornea and the iris, on top of the natural lens.

Collamer is a fairly new material and there is not much experience with it yet, so there is not much data in terms of adverse reactions. But it is FDA approved.

I have had no experience with implanting this type of lens, but I have colleagues who have had implanted other phakic IOLs and their patients are quite satisfied.

If I needed a refractive procedure, I would probably go for phakic IOLs over LASIK.
