My son has excessively weepy eyes?!

Question:

My son has excessively weepy eyes?

I don't know if this is relevant, but he recovered from the flu yesterday, which he had for three days and stayed home from school.
He came to me tonight and said "white stuff" was coming out of his eyes and I thought it was just the normal "morning eye gunk" (Yes, I know it's a little distasteful) but it's pretty excessive.
It's coming out of under his upper eyelid, along the red part, and every corner of his eye in sticky string-like blobs.
It's very irritating to him and affects his vision, he says once he cleans it out it comes back again every minute. And it's making his eye sore trying to get the stuff out with his finger (which he washed, so he's not getting in there with dirty fingers). His eye is red now, and I've been giving him Redness Relief eyedrops but they don't seem to work.
I'm thinking about taking him to the doctor...
any ideas as to what this is?

Answers:

it sounds like conjuntivitis, every kid gets it, not really to worry but you will need to use medicine for it to go away, so you would have to take him to the doctor for a prescription.

Please don't medicate a child yourself without a doctors opinion, it could be something mild, but you said you are putting drops in his eyes, they can definitivelly harm him.
