Eye hurts but nothing in it?!

Eye hurts but nothing in it?
my eye feels like there is something in it for the second night in a row. i wear contacts and last night and tonight i took them out and my left eye is watering and it feels like an eyelash is poking it. Its fine when i have my contacts in.
it even hurts when i close my eyes or blink. i do know that its my upper lid cause when i raise my lid it feels fine. its driving me insane!! anyone know possibly whats causing it?

actually, i just got it figured out a min. ago. i had a tiny speck of dirt. thanks to everyone. and if this thing would let me vote now i would but i got to wait another four hours...

you probably have something caught underneath your upper lid. people get bits of dirt or even eyelashes up there. when you have your contacts in, they protect your cornea from the object like a protective covering so you dont feel it anymore.
if you can flip your lids and get someone else to look, thats the best thing. otherwise just flush with water and do your best to get the water under your upper lid.
