Can I clean my glasses with Windex?!

Question:

Can I clean my glasses with Windex?

I just got them and I'm pretty sure there's likely a special glasses cleaner I should buy (is there??) but in the meantime...is Windex ok? I kind of already used it on one pair.....I just sprayed windex on a paper towel and wiped them.

Answers:

DON'T USE WINDEX!!!! It has ammonia in it and it will cause the coatings on your lenses to peel. You do want to use a lens safe cleaner available at any optical store. It is made with special detergents that are safe for lenses that will cut through the grease and get the lenses sparkling clean. And always use a 100% cotton cloth when cleaning your lenses. Paper products like paper towels and tissue will cause fine scratches in your lenses over time making them appear foggy. All these products are available at your local optical.
