Opticians say that my mother in law has a glitter effect in her eyes. What does !

Question:

Opticians say that my mother in law has a glitter effect in her eyes. What does this mean. They say its rare?

She has been told that it is genetic but did not explain what it is or why she has it.

Answers:

This is unlikely to be PVD, as this is neither 'glittery' or rare.

Its difficult to say without more information, but what immediately springs to mind is something called 'asteroid hyalosis', which is where the vitreous, or jelly in the eyes, forms numerous small, white-greenish flecks which float about in the jelly, and look quite sparkly for ayone looking into the eye. It's perfectly harmless, and reasonably rare (i've seen it 3-4 times in 2 years).
