Question:
How do eye doctors determine the right perscription for glasses for a child who is 3 years old are younger?
Answers:
With children too young to use the standard vision charts or even a "tumbling E" chart, they have two choices. They can either do a computerized refractor to measure the eyes and determine the best corrective lens prescription or they can use a technique called retinoscopy. With that, they shine a light into the eye and measure the refractive error by the movement of the light around the retina. They can also do these exams after they have dialated the eyes. It's not as easy to do with an infant or very young child as it is with adults, but with computers it has become a lot easier. Usually the pediatric opthomologist will go through the procedures with you when the appointment is made.
