Retinal detachment recovery time in children.?!

Question:

Retinal detachment recovery time in children.?

Hi,
Just want to know if any other parent has had a child in for retinal detachment surgery. My 11 yr old went in for surgery yesterday and was discharged from hospital today. She is very sore and cannot open her eye, does not like the eye sticking together and wants it gone. Can you please tell me the recovery time and what you went through with your child. I'm also finding that putting in 3 different eye drops, 2 of these eye drops need to be put in 4 times a day is a task. Any idea how to get her to put them in????

Answers:

I just went through a retinal detachment myself in January. I had a vitrectomy done, with a full gas bubble inserted, and the lasering of the retina. I had to be face down for 3 weeks so the gas bubble would push against the retina, and so the scars from the lasering would form. I had the scripts of dilating drops 4 times a day, anti bacterial drops 2 times a day. It is a hard process to go through, but if you follow your surgerons orders to a T, She should recover fine.

With the eye drops, have her lean her head back and you drop them in. SHE HAS to do it, or major complications could follow. Just a few weeks of the drops, not to long. The eye is the fastest healing thing in the body. Good luck, and keep her in prayer for a speedy recovery.

Now, I would ask your doctor, but DO NOT get water into the effected eye, but they should have gave you a saline solution and with a q tip, you can clean off all the gunk that built up. The soreness will go away within a day or 2. It is from the clamps to keep her eye open during surgery. Good luck.
