Anybody know anything about brown eye colouring??!

Question:

Anybody know anything about brown eye colouring??

I've read somewhere that if one parent has brown eyes and the other has blue or green, for example, that the child is more likely to have brown eyes as they are more dominant.
Is this true??
I can't remember the name of the site I saw it on, so if anybody knows of a good website with this information, I would be really grateful.

Answers:

Eye colour is 'pot luck' in 1 sense, as someone mentioned earlier, as it's all connected to the genetic material that you get from both of your parents at conception.

There were 3 basic rules that Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) defined:
1. That the inheritance of each trait is determined by "units" or "factors" (now called genes) that are passed on to descendents unchanged.

2. That an individual inherits one such unit from each parent for each trait*

3. That a trait may not show up in an individual but can still be passed on to the next generation.

That's the general principles covered.
*Some physical 'traits' are more complex and governed by a combination of genetic characteristics - oh for it to be simple!!

Eye colour isn't just determined by 1 simple component, which is why we have eye colours including Hazel, Brown, Green, Grey, Blue etc. It is thought that eye colour is governed by at least 3 of our genes.

There's a short summary of eye colour genetics here, which is quite simple to understand:

Hope this helps give you some clarity on this.

Good luck! Rob
