Answers:

the other guy doesnt know what he is talking about- people with astigmatism can get contacts. You will need to get toric lenses specially made for astigmatism your optician will reccomend the right type.

There are so many different brands of lenses, the two types of lenses are RGP (rigid gas permeable. These are hard lenses which are very small and sit on your eye, they are difficult to adapt to and can fall out of your eye these are the type that are not reccomended for aviation and the ones that are easy to lose. not very many people get these.)

The other type is soft lenses - available in dailiy disposables, monthlies (which you take out everynight and last 30 days), night and day lenses which you wear for 30 days continuous wear, bi weekly (you change them every two weeks), and others.

If you have never had lenses before you will need to have a valid s/t (this is either a year or two years depending on what your oticans has stated as your re call period) you will need to see a contact lens optician who will check the health of your eyes and measure the curvature etc. He/she will then reccomend the best type of lens for your needs. (be talkative to hgelp them understad what will be best for you) you will then be given some lenses to wear for half hour or so then you iwll go back and they will check the fit and how you are gettin on with them. They will teach you to insert them properly and then you will be given some lenses for a trial. you will then go back a week or a month later for another check. after that checks are usually required 6-months to a year aprt.

you do not have to get your lenses from the person who checks your eyes, you can ask for your contact lens prescroption and get lenses from the net.

to give you an example of lenses - i am lazy with cleaning my lenses and taking them out and used to try to sleep in dailies (not good!!). So now i wear continuous wear and jsut change them every month. It's so nice to be able to wake up and see the time and gives 360 degree vision whereas you can sometimes get limited vision with glasses.

the only downsides of contact lenses is the amount of care they ned but after you get into a ritual its fine, you will still need glasses incase you have problems with your lenses. And not everyone is suitable for contacts but its owrth checking out i would defintely reccomned it.
