Hit in the eye with shuttlecock.?!

Question:

Hit in the eye with shuttlecock.?

A few hours ago I was playing badminton and was hit in my right eye by a shuttlecock going quite fast.
My eye has a little bit of discomfort but im slightly concerned as there seems to be some sort of bluish/black tint going around on the white of eye.
What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks

Answers:

The "white of the eye" is called the sclera, but before the sclera there is actually a thin translucent moist skin of the eye which is called the conjunctiva. Underneath the sclera is the choroid which is bluish black in color.

There could be several reasons for the bluish, black discoloration. One of the "safer" ones could be because there is a thin hematoma underneath the conjunctiva which is consistent with being hit by a shuttlecock. Another more serious reason could be thinning of the sclera which has nothing to do with the shuttlecock.

Either way, you should get a proper evaluation since trauma to the eye can cause, retinal detachment, hyphema (blood in the front part of the eye) and cataracts later on, just to name a few. I think you would sleep better if YOU KNEW for a fact that the shuttlecock did not cause much damage and you can only confirm this with a ophthalmologic consultation.

IT IS ALWAYS a good idea to wear protective eye wear when playing fast-paced projectile related sports such as badminton.
