Flashing in my right eye?!

Question:

Flashing in my right eye?

Okay, so I was just in my room on the computer on this site actually and my vision was weird. It was like I had just gotten my picture takend, you know how your vision isn't all there, but it was only in my right eye. So I was like whatever, its probably because I'm looking at the computer screen. So I stopped and my vision didn't get better...as I was looking around I realized I saw something flashing my my right eye. whenever i looked directly at something to the bottom and far side of my eye I saw flashing. it was freaking me out, it wouldn't go away and it was very distracting. So I came on here and looked it up, some people said it could be floaters or a detached retina??? What do you guys think? This is the first time its happened...the flashing and I don't want to freak out for no reason. Thanks.

I wasn't on the computer for very long, maybe 10 minutes...so I don't think it was directly due to me being on the computer.

Flashes are generally one of these:
Vitreous floaters
Ocular Migraine
Retinal Detachment

Vitreous floaters are common: there's a jelly like substance inside the eye called vitreous. Sometimes little pieces of it clump up and then float around in the vitreous. Floaters in your vision can look like mild little specks and spots, or large spots obscuring vision. The key thing about floaters is: that they float. Sometimes these little clumps can pull away and stretch a tiny part of the retina, which can result in flashes. Once the clump has broken free, the vitreous lays flat against the retina again, and the flashes should stop. Like a snowglobe, floaters can be 'shaken up' with head movement. Floaters generally harmless, although they may never go away.

Sometimes, the little clump gently stretching on a tiny part of the retina doesn't float free, and keeps pulling the retina up. This can cause a Retinal Detachment. Symptoms of retinal detachment are: a sudden change in vision (all black, or dim, or very blurred)
a sensation of a veil/curtain/cobweb appearing in your vision
a shower of flashes or floaters
If you suspect a retinal detachment, you should be seen right away (call the ER if after hours).

However, it sounds like you had an Ocular Migraine. Some people suffer periodic episodes of 'vision disturbances'. Some people experience light flashes, or whited out spots in their vision, or 'swirly things'. Sometimes they have an actual headache before, during, or after an episode. Episodes, on average, can last a couple of minutes to an hour, although some people have them longer. Episodes can be as infrequent as a couple of times a year, or as frequent as a few times a week.

In any case, when it comes to eyes, a "better safe than sorry" approach is best. If you don't know what the problem is, have an eye doctor check it out.
