When u get an eye exam and they dilate your pupils and do the vision test with the machine, etc, can they see if there are any problems with the eye, such as retinal detachement or cateracts or does only a special eye doctor see these types of things

Dilation allows your eye doctor to look at the furthest periphery of your retina. Your retina lines the entire inner surface of your eyeball. Your eye doctor can still usually see the center of your retina, but to look for tiny tears, etc, the dilation is necessary.

Also, with small children, the dilation is also a side effect of what is called cycloplegia. In this case, the physician also uses the effect of the cycloplegic drop (which also dilates), to examine a child for refractive errors that they can mask.
